The well known creator Charles Eames created numerous chairs in the world, with his wife Ray Kaiser. Charles and Ray Eames were pioneers, constantly looking for new materials for their innovative designs. He was a designer not only on furniture, but toy, glider, and magazine cover. Compared with former two chairs, the unique of this chair is not on its material, but material Eames assembled.

The couple first plywood chair – the Eames Lounge Chair Wood (LCW)-used a heavy rubber washer glued to the backrest of the chair and screwed to the lumbar support.This innovation is used in the design of the Eames Lounge chair. The backrest and headrest are screwed together by a pair of aluminum braces.

About a year and a half ago, I had purchased an Eames Lounge Chair replica from a second hand shop here in Seattle. It was in relatively decent shape, cheap, the leather was original/real and the wood was not splitting or delaminated at all. Still, it needed some love. I did not know much about restoring furniture, upholstery, or many other minor, but necessary, aspects in renovating this chair. But, what I did know was that I REALLY wanted one, and that I could never afford a new or original model.

When I first started this restoration, I did not have a real camera, nor did I have the shop space I do now. So this Blog may have gaps or steps with little or no imagery. Sorry, but again, I will try to include as much as possible. Also for the material purchased, I went to Pacific Fabric, which is really close to my house here in seattle.

The Materials

The chair is composed of three curved plywood shells: the headrest, the backrest and the seat. In early production, beginning in 1956 and running through the very early 1990s, the shells were made up of five thin layers of plywood which were covered by a veneer of Brazilian rosewood. Because excessive harvesting of this species since colonial times has led to its extreme endangerment, the use of Brazilian rosewood was discontinued in the early 1990s. Current production uses seven layers of plywood covered by finishing veneers of cherry, walnut, and other non-endangered woods.

The seat cushions eschew standard stapled or nailed upholstery. Instead, the cushions are sewn with a zipper around the outer edge that connects them to a stiff plastic backing. The backing affixes to the plywood shells with a series of hidden clips and rings.

Introduction

While the Eamses aimed to develop furniture that could be mass-produced and affordable, the Eames Lounge was an exception; it was the the first chair that the couple designed for a high-end market. When the chair was dramatically unveiled on the Arlene Francis Home show in an aura of glamour, the Eames Lounge and Ottoman instantly became a status symbol for the well appointed home of the 1950.

Charles had a vision to create a chair with warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman mitt. This luxury chair was inspired by the traditional English Club Chair.
